About Virginia Lottery

The Virginia Lottery founded in 1987, is the best way to have fun, give back, and support your community! We're not just a business—we're a community. For over 30 years, we've been building an amazing organization committed to growing and giving back, and having fun while doing it too. Operating entirely on revenue from game sales, we generate approximately $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools.

The Virginia Lottery in 2021

We're so excited to announce that sales for Fiscal Year 2021 were the highest in Virginia Lottery history!

  •  Net proceeds totaled $766.7 million for the Lottery Proceeds Fund. This is constitutionally mandated to support local public education.
  •  51.7% increase in ticket sales. We saw an astounding ticket sales increase from last year to $3,259.0 million, and net income from Business-type Lottery activities totaled $766.8 million—an increase of $172.0 million over last year.
  •  Higher sales resulted in retailers earning 15.4% more than last year ($18.6 million total). With that extra money going into their pockets, they were able to pay out an additional $139.3 million in compensation to their retailers!
  • The Virginia Lottery also launched iLottery in FY21. It brought in over $22 million in revenue and greatly increased our gaming services expenses.
  • Another $5.5 million added to our general fund. We were able to collect taxes on mobile-based sports betting operators starting in January 2021, in which the money was used to help fund the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund. We collected over $11 million from these licenses in FY21 alone!

This was one of our best years yet, and we're so grateful for all our players' support as we continue working toward making Virginia's future brighter than ever before!
