In November 2002, Tennessee voters approved the Tennessee state lottery for funding college scholarships. The following spring, the legislature created the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation, and the bill was signed on June 2003. 

Lottery ticket sales began on January 20, 2004, with four instant games which include: Tennessee Millionaire, Lucky 7’s, $100,000 Jackpot and Tennessee Treasures. The ticket sales from those games reached an astonishing $10.8 million on the very first day. In March 2004, the TN Lottery launched its first draw game Cash 3 and other Tennessee Lottery results and games including Powerball in April and Lotto 5 in August.

The Tennessee Education Lottery launched a Summer Internship Program designed for students at the state’s historical Black colleges and universities. Lottery proceeds benefit Tennessee students attending both public or private colleges or universities across the state through Lottery-funded scholarships and grants. More than 100,000 people benefit each year from the awards and program including pre-kindergarten and after-school programs. 

• For fiscal year 2021, Tennessee, 5,252 retailers generated $2,083,874,000 in gross sales.
• This economic activity generated $524,387,000 in transfers to beneficiaries.
• $1,253,821,000 was awarded to players in prizes.

How old do you have to be to play the TN Lottery?

You must be at least 18 years of age or older to purchase or redeem lottery tickets in the state of Tennessee. 

Can you buy lottery tickets through a subscription online or through the mail?

Unfortunately, you cannot buy lottery tickets through a subscription or via mail. Tennessee law requires that all Lottery tickets must be purchased in-person at a participating retailer. 

Can you purchase lottery tickets with a debit or credit card in Tennessee?

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase tickets with a credit or debit card. TN lottery tickets can only be purchased with cash. 


Where can I buy tickets?

The TN Lottery has approximately 5,000 retailers in the state. 

Can you purchase tickets in advance?

Yes, lottery players can purchase Powerball, Mega, Lotto America, and Cash 4 Life tickets up to 10 drawings in advance. For Tennessee Cash tickets, you can purchase up to 12 drawings in advance.

How is the TN lottery conducted?

The following games have their drawings conducted in Nashville using the automated machines. Cash 3, Cash 4, Tennessee Cash, Daily Tennessee Jackpot and KENO. These computers generate random numbers with no human involvement and all drawings are videotaped. Once the winning numbers are drawn, they can be viewed on TEL broadcast television stations, on Tnlottery.com, or with the TN Lottery app. Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America, and CASH 4 LIFE are multi-state drawings not held in Tennessee. 

Can you remail anonymous in the state of TN?

Unfortunately, you cannot remain anonymous if you win a lottery jackpot in the state of Tennessee. The law requires the identities of winners to be made public. The only way around it is to set up a blind trust or a corporation before you claim your prize and you can claim the prize in your corporation and keep your personal identity a secret. 


Where do the funds go?

The proceeds from ticket sales go to fund state education programs, scholarships, grants, and K-12 after-school programs and historically Black Colleges. 


How long do I have to collect my winnings?

You have 180 days from the date of the draw to collect your lottery winnings.

How many employees are lottery retailers are there.

The staff includes 160 employees and over 5,000 Tennessee retailers.

How do I claim a winning ticket?

There are many claim centers that you can collect your winnings. You can go to the Nashville Headquarters claim center and the claim centers in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Memphis, which are currently all open for walk-ins from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m 

If you have won a prize of $200,000 or more, you must claim your prize at the Nashville Headquarters & Claim Center.

When you are going into a claim center please make sure you have the following :

• A signed winning ticket. (Copies not accepted.)

• A completed claim form for prizes of $600 and more.

• Proof of ID such as State-Issued Driver’s License, Military ID card, etc.

• Proof of Social Security Number. (Social Security number must be on a computer-generated document, such as Social Security card, pay stub or tax forms.)

What lottery games are in Tennessee?

Tennessee has the following lottery games. 

Tennessee Powerball

Powerball is a very popular multi-state game that draws at 9:59 p.m. CT on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Powerball recently had the biggest jackpot in history with 2.04 Billion. 

Tennessee Mega Millions

The Tennessee Mega Millions is a multi-state game where you can win millions by matching five white balls, this time from1 to 70, along with a Mega Ball from 1 to 25. The Mega Millions is drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 10 p.m. CT.

Lotto America 

For Lotto America, a jackpot game. You have to select five numbers between 1 and 52 along with one Star Ball number from 1 to 10. Lotto America results every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:30 p.m. CT.

Tennessee Cash

For Tennessee Cash, players must select five numbers between 1 and 35 and then a Cash Ball number from 1 to 5. Results come out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 p.m. CT.

Cash4Life

Cash4Life you need to pick five numbers between 1 and 60 and one Cash Ball number from 1 to 4. Drawings are held at 8 p.m. CT, everyday.

Cash 4

Is a 4 number game where you select four numbers from 1 to 9 on your playslip, and then choose exact, or box. Cash 4 draws occur mornings, middays, and evenings at 9:28 a.m., 12:28 p.m., and 6:28 p.m.

Cash 3

Cash 3 is a three number game where you pick three numbers ranging from 1 to 9 and specify the play type (Exact Order, Any Order, or Combo). Cash 3 draws mornings at 9:28 a.m., middays at 12:28 p.m., and evenings at 6:28 p.m.
